2021.09.23 17:44 toddinmke Review: Uplift 4-Leg Standing Desk (V2) Commercial

I thought I’d take some time to do a thorough review of the Uplift 4-leg Standing Desk (V2) Commercial that I recently purchased. I’ll take you through my decision framework, the purchase process, the delivery process (preview: it sucked!), the setup and now the use. I’m sorry it’s so long, but I think it has some useful information that may be beneficial for you.

Other than some wire management, this is the final \"sitting\" position. This is at 30.1\"
Decision Framework
I recently got a new job and decided I wanted to move out of the small home office “closet” I had and into a spare bedroom. My wife agreed and I was now on the hunt for a desk. I had a standing desk when I was in my prior role, back in the office and I like the ability to break the day up and stand for a while. I also know it’s a premium piece of furniture and I didn’t want to go cheap.
I joined a few Reddit subgroups (StandingDesk and /Workspaces) and just started looking at the comments and what others were doing. I took a lot of notes, saved a lot of posts and comments and clicked down many rabbit holes of products on a slew of websites. I shortlisted a few that I saw online, and I also went in-person to OfficeDepot and Costco to look at their offerings. Ultimately, I ended up watching some Youtube videos about Uplift desks, and I came to the conclusion that the 4-Leg Standing Desk (V2) Commercial was the one for me. Why? There were some good reviews that the wobble was reasonably contained, and having that those front legs gave quite a bit of stability. The Commercial version has a cross-bar on the back for additional support and stability, and if you’re going to make a purchase like this, it wasn’t that much more expensive to be sure.
Purchase Process
The Uplift site does a pretty good job of laying out all the options. You start with the basic frame (in my case the 4-leg desk) and then you can customize it with the table top (I chose the dark rubberwood) and then all sorts of accessories and upgrades. To be honest it’s a little overwhelming, but they have good overviews and videos of many of the products so you can see them and compare them. I read through some of the reviews that it was recommended to get the monitor mounts directly from Uplift, as they would fit the tabletop better. So I ordered that along with a few other bells and whistles. Completing the process was pretty good. I ordered mine on Friday, September 3, 2021 – the day before Labor Day in the US. I got the confirmation email quickly, but didn’t reasonably think anything would start to get fulfilled until the next week.
Delivery Process
As I hinted before, the delivery process was absolutely terrible. For the most part, I don’t blame Uplift for this as it’s their shipper, FedEx that really screwed things up. But as I told Uplift, it’s their shipper, not mine. And ultimately I hold them accountable for it.
I’ll give you the cliff notes version of the delivery process. The order was on September 3rd and I received confirmation on Tuesday the 7th that all the parts were sent out the door. There was likely a one-day delay due to US Labor Day holiday. No issues.
Uplift makes it easy for you to tap into their ERP system so you can see where things are, and even get tracking numbers. The anticipated delivery date would be Friday, September 10th. Hooray! I’m getting excited and I start ensuring I have space for the boxes and carve out my weekend for assembly.
I received one of five boxes on Friday, as expected. Nothing else came that day. I got two more boxes on Saturday, September 11th, but I was missing the table top and the fifth box contained the monitor arms, the keypad controls and a few other accessories.
FedEx is running WAY behind. I learned they claim they are five days behind unloading the trucks at their distribution center near my house. They say there’s such a growth in ecommerce and a shortage of workers. I told them to start declining business if they can’t deliver, and to pay their workers more.
So I didn’t get the tabletop until Friday, September 17th. It seems they didn’t unload the other trucks, or misplaced the other box, until Wednesday, September 22nd. So while I was able to setup the table on the 17th, it was about 2 feet off the ground and unusable.
I’m actually a pretty patient person, but FedEx clearly had misplaced the package, and I wasn’t able to use this $1,800 table, and there was no-end in sight despite multiple calls and tweets to FedEx and Uplift. I finally got a guy, Andy, at Uplift to overnight me a keypad so I could use the desk.
I went through this detail because it seems like Uplift only uses FedEx and FedEx is incapable. So if you order your desk, Uplift seems to be good getting it out the door, but FedEx is incompetent so you should expect to take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks before you get all your boxes.
The Setup
I have to say the setup is pretty straightforward. Other than a Phillips head screwdriver you’ll need from your toolbox, all the other parts are included. They’re well-labeled and the instructions are easy to follow. I did jump ahead by installing the legs on both ends before realizing the support bars need to be installed, but I corrected that error in about 5 minutes.
The only thing I really needed another set of hands for was installing the cross-bar support.
A few notes and adjustments that I made:
1) The free wire management tray that comes with the desk isn’t great. I installed it, installed the cross-bar and started using the desk, only to realize I wanted to take the wire management tray off and do something different. But it’s inaccessible once installed as the crossbar blocks access. So I had to do some disassembly to take this off. I ended up buying a 2”x2” cable raceway that somebody recommended via a YouTube video. It didn’t fit where I wanted to put it, but I ended up finding a great solution. See some of the photos I posted.

This is the wire management tray that comes with the desk. It's not very good.

This shows the wire management raceway that I ended up installing.
2) I ended up mounting a 12-outlet / 4-USB outlet power strip on the underside of the desk using some double-sided “extreme” mount tape. The powerstrip cable is the only thing that comes down and goes to the wall. Everything on the desk goes into the powerstrip and the wires all hidden in the raceway. It worked out perfect.

Another view of the raceway, plus the power strip mounted to the bottom.
3) The cable ties that come with the desk are OK, but I found they didn’t stick to the underside of the table very well, both on the metal components or the wood of the table’s underside. They managed to work well when I added the mounting tape I mentioned earlier. I also purchased some Velcro strip ties that work pretty well.

I highly recommend this tape. It's working really well!
4) I would avoid ordering the wireless charging power hub. This is the only thing I ordered that I’d like to send back. I use a cover and pop-socket on my phone, and it doesn’t work with those accessories on the phone. It wants a “naked” phone and I’m not about to pop my phone out of the case everytime. Instead I’m using the Ubiolabs wireless charging pad I’ve had, which does work through these accessories.
The Use of the Desk
Once I got the temporary control keypad, I could operate the desk to a reasonable height and set it up, at least temporary, until the final box arrived. And I have to say using this desk is huge upgrade from the space I had before. The desk is 60-inches across and 30-inches deep. And not only is this desk really heavy – I’m guessing about 150 pounds total - it’s really sturdy. At the sitting position, I’m banging away on my keyboard now and I can see the drink moving slightly, but not much. And there’s no discernable wobble when I’m typing while the webcam is active.

Standing position for me. 40.1 inches
There’s definitely more wobble when the desk is up higher in the standing position, but it’s all extremely tolerable. I honestly thought it would be worse, but the desk is so heavy and sturdy, there’s not much to it.
The keypad will let you move things to 1/10th of an inch, and then I can store these heights for my sitting and standing. Admittedly, having 5 settings is probably a bit much. But it could be useful if you’re sharing the desk with others. I wouldn’t recommend spending the money for the upgrade.
Beside the missing parts and terrible shipping experience, I’m pretty pleased with the actual desk. I still have a tiny bit of wire management to do when my new work computer arrives, and I get some adapters I’ve ordered. The wires in the picture will eventually be all cleaned up this weekend. The bottom line on Uplift is it’s expensive, but it’s a premium product; they just need to find a different shipper because it ruins their image.
I’m happy to take any questions you may have via comments or DM.

2021.09.23 17:44 MarianOfOz I have this question since I've read about the simulation theory. If we are living in the Matrix, why the simulators are letting us destroy the planet? What is their purpose?

I think they should be more advanced than us, so why the mayhem?
Why create a system so complex, and then let us ruin everything?
I can't understand.
Maybe we are not even an experiment, just a game.
If anyone has a theory I'd love to read it.
Thank you very much.
I'm italian, so please forgive me if I've made some gross mistake.

2021.09.23 17:43 OneTrueLord Why are tutorials with ProgrammaticUI are so less online?

I finished an udemy course which was made totally with storyboards, even tutorials on youtube mainly use storyboard or SwiftUI. Even top youtubers like Sean Allen have privated a lot of their videos with ProgrammaticUI. I hit a road block like 2 weeks back, but finally after searching how to add constraints in ProgrammaticUI, how to add buttons, how to add navigation bar, stackviews etc, I think it is very easier now for me to add the bits and pieces together and finally I have built a couple of smalls apps in the past week totally programmatically from scratch. Storyboards is easy but programmaticUI seems to come more intuitively to me and feels much more easier even though you have to write lots of code to do simple tasks.
How did you learn ProgrammaticUI? What was your journey like and what do you think about less resources available online for learning ProgrammaticUI and iOS development in general?

2021.09.23 17:43 PsychedelicParamour [Regret/Anxiety] Did I go into the wrong field? Can anyone relate?

My whole undergraduate career has been a gradual move towards more biological/life science research. I started out as Aerospace Engineering and interned at Boeing/NASA my first UG summer, changed to Materials Science and did REUs in biosensor development and protein engineering. I fell in love with Neuroscience, and eventually joined a Bioengineering program and neural tissue engineering lab.
Now, I do love neuroscience, but I feel like I don't have the skills/characteristics of a someone who can thrive in this field. I am now starting my 4th year in the program.

  1. I dislike, and am terrible at, mathematics. I dislike high level mathematics/statistics, which is what a lot of my electrophysiology research necessitates. I've been able to get to this point in life by studying longer than my peers to do half as well in courses - I feel like this was a red flag.
  2. I am a clumsy non-detail oriented individual. I feel like I just suck at cell culture - I really try my best, but whenever something doesn't work out well, I just become overwhelmed with guilt and second guessing about everything that I could have done wrong. Maybe I pipetted new media little aggressively? Maybe I was imaging that plate too long and that hurt the cells? etc, etc. I just feel like I stumble and trip up so much more than my peers, even though my tissue culture work is less convoluted than theirs. Having a month of work just...die... it really fucks me up in the head.
  3. I enjoy working with people. As I have explored my neuroscience passions, I've become increasingly exposed to the world of psychology. I've become very well read on the research, I've attended a bunch of talks, and think that I would feel more engaged/satisfied by that work.
  4. No one ever complemented my math/analytical skills, but they always complemented my "people" skills. I can always hold space for my friends and help people work through their traumas and challenging experiences. I've been complimented on my ability to do this for years by different friends as I've helped them work through various life challenges. I always shrugged it off, but now I'm like "Ya know what, I am really good at this, maybe much better than I ever was at math or engineering".
For context, my culture I was maintaining started curling up on itself unexpectedly and I'm deeply bummed. Maybe I just want to rationalize this fuck up as the Universe telling me this isn't for me. I feel my research is inadequate, unoriginal, and unimportant. I can't imagine myself graduating, and thats sad. I'm starting my 4th year right now.

I lurk a lot on the forum, so I just wanted to thank you all for your post and advice. I was able to go from a part time bookkeeper role to an internship at a local PA firm. I only had about 3 months at the first job but I was able to go from $12 to $18.50 which I was not expecting, giving I live in a fairly LCOL area. They said that I should also get a pretty big jump upon graduation next semester, so we will see how it goes!
